HIPAA Compliance
What is HIPAA compliance?
The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) was signed into effect by President Clinton to protect health insurance coverage for workers and their families when they change or lose their jobs (Portability) and to protect health data integrity, confidentiality, and availability (Accountability).
Healthcare organizations must start now to understand the business impact of HIPAA and plan not only for compliance, but for strategic advantage. The challenge is to fully understand the impact of the law and to work a HIPAA response into overall planning.
The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act is mainly categorized into four components which are:-

-
Physical safeguards
-
Technical Security Services

CCHIT Compliance
What is CCHIT Compliance?
A CCHIT CertifiedSM EHR is an assurance to your customers –
physicians and other providers – and to others in the marketplace
– payers, purchasers and consumers – that your products
meet all basic criteria for functionality, interoperability and
security. CCHIT is the recognized certification authority for EHRs;
it invests in outreach campaigns designed to help your current and
potential customers understand the value of CCHIT Certified EHR
products.
CCHIT works with all stakeholders to gain consensus on certification
criteria and testing processes related to the industry standards
produced by healthcare standards development organizations (SDOs).
Certification is a mechanism for enhancing the confidence and orderliness
of the HIT marketplace. The inspection and testing process performed
when certifying HIT products is based on agreed-upon standards,
as well as unbiased inspection and testing.
Certification for ambulatory EHR products is available in 2006;
inpatient EHR products will follow in 2007. CCHIT’s certification
criteria and processes are created and piloted with vendor input,
and with respect for the business impact of certification.
